When the hot gets going Floridians head to water. With temps in the high 90s this weekend was perfect for splashing in a cool river. Hubby and I packed up the canoe and took a trip to the Wacissa. I grew up just down the road from the Wacissa River and I remember often going to cool off in the summer (I grew up without AC) or bathing in it when we lost power for days on end. I had a love/hate relationship with water as a child. I enjoyed swimming and was quite good at it but always hated what could be waiting in the water. I am very scared of snakes and the area around the river has many cottonmouths (water moccasins), a venomous water loving pit viper, luckily we didn't see a single one this trip.
The recreation area at the put in has been cleaning up and revamped since I was a child, it is nice seeing the area in loved condition. We found a parking spot close to the boat ramp but since there were lots of small motor boats putting in we dropped the canoe into the shallows beside the ramp, we jumped into the wonderfully cool water then climbed in the canoe.

I am grateful my parents are letting us keep the canoe at our house, we can take her out when ever we want rather than having to drive out to the farm to pick her up. This canoe has been with my family since the 70s and my dad even bought it used back then. She is large and heavy (and completely ugly) but she is a trooper and has never let us down. She had been in waters from Florida to Canada and everywhere between while on our camp all summer long family trips. I guess she used to be light blue but the previous owners must have hunted so they painted her an ugly shade of OD, some of the blue is starting to show again. I told my dad I might repaint her and he said okay as long as I didn't paint her pink, LOL.
Apart from being hot it was a perfect day to paddle.
We had several paddle splashing fights to cool off.

Not many of my pictures came out but this one of a submerged log is pretty cool.
Kayakers are always surprised to see a canoe using a kayak paddle. It works really well in our canoe since it is so large and slow to turn. My dad always used it when he went out alone for better maneuverability.
We paddled about a mile down the river to get to Big Blue, a spring with amazing bright blue water. The spring was packed with people, lots of motor boats were anchored at the entrance and the kayaks and canoes like us stuck to the edges. The spring is popular to swim in, one motor boat made me really mad because when they came into the spring they kept their motor on even with snorkelers in the water. Next time we go I think I'll take my mermaid tail and swim. Hubby just found his old snorkeling fins so I may mod my tail with them in it to get better propulsion in the water.
I know these are blurry but the color of the water is true to life, isn't it amazing?
The bird life was incredible. We saw many types of herons, egrets, and even a family of wood ducks. I was enjoying the experience more than trying to take photos, next time maybe I'll get more pictures.

After lounging at Big Blue for a while we paddled back in, we planned to dock and climb out but there was a sunbather on the boat dock that didn't seem like she was going to move and we had to dodge a few boats putting in that didn't look before they tried to tie up and swing around. We waited a little then I just jumped out and pulled the canoe up to the ramp. The water was deeper than I remembered at the ramp so I ended up in boob deep water, least it was a good way to cool off.

I ended up looking like a drown rat for my outfit pics, oh well. I was ecstatic when I found this button up at Goodwill. Not only was it lightweight, it buttoned over my boobs and hips, has long enough arms, adorable ruffles, it is purple gingham! It is the perfect summer outdoors shirt, it will be great for hiking too.
The amazing sunnies are from one of my favorite local shops, Quarter Moon Imports.
I had been in lots of pain this week so getting out in the open air and stretching some muscles did me lots of good. I'm still a little sore but the rain should hold off this week so I can get in some good exercise to hold the pain at bay.
