Unicorns and Glitter

One of my favorite quick costumes I keep around for the random costume party is Flo, the Progressive girl. It is quite funny that my costume apron is about 2 years old now. I really enjoyed having a costume that people knew who I was let alone 2 years later people still know who I am.
I have switched out pants/skirt since I first made her up. Goodwill all the way, lets face it, I don't have much use for white jeans other than for this costume. I used my black chucks since I don't have blue ones anymore. To do the apron I picked up the plain white apron and both the badge and I <3 insurance pin on Amazon. I printed out the Progressive logo and stenciled it on with old acrylic paint (which ran because it was old, but a little white paint fixed it up fairly well).

Did you know Progressive has an official Dress Like Flo page? Check it out! It gave me lots of tips.
I struggled with flicked eyeliner and teasing my hair the first time I did Flo, today it came out perfect.

Greek Food Fest

Once a year (many years past it was every other year) The Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church hosts a Greek food festival. It is one of the must do activities in Tallahassee,  especially if you love Greek food. I met my parents there this morning right when it started at 10 am, I was lucky to snag a parking spot remotely close to the church. For lunch I got a la carte large peices of spanakopita and tiropita as well as 3 dolmas. I restrained myself when going through the pasty lines, I only got 3 sweets and a loaf of feta bread to go with dinner tonight.
Fresh from the oven tiropita
My selection of sweets: Chocolate baklava cheesecake, baklava, and galaktoboureko. (try saying that five times fast). I ate the cheesecake at the festival and saved the other two for Hubby, he only gets half of the custard one to be fair.
I got to the grounds a few minutes before my parents so I got to walk through the church, it was astoundingly beautiful.
I had to wear my Mediterranean skirt today, I think some people thought I might have been one of the dancers since my skirt was so full.
The event vendors always have amazingly beautiful jewelry and gifts. It is always good I am broke this time of year, I would spend a fortune on citrine and turquoise jewelry.
There was an amazing Russian booth there this year, they had every type of matryoshka doll you could imagine (including a Doctor Who one) as well as lovely hand crafted and painted earrings, bracelets, and barrettes. Look at these adorable ornaments, I ended up getting some since they were only $3 each. I also got some pretty things for my MIL and aunt's Christmas gifts.

Do You Have the Time?

Lately I have been overwhelmingly seeking spooky things, perhaps it is because Halloween is closing in, perhaps not. I have photographed and been photographed with the Calvin C Phillips Mausoleum many times, it has even appeared on the blog before. While seeking spooky locations and info I stumbled upon this video

Calvin C. Phillips: A man obsessed with time from Kristin Petersen on Vimeo.

What a haunting story. I plan to take flowers to the mausoleum on the 19th of November.
2019 will be 100th anniversary of his death, I wish I could start a campaign to raise money to restore the beauty of the monument, although given his personality perhaps he wished to let it wither away to nothing. It is a shame his house is no longer standing, I wish it would have still been standing by the time I came around.

Old bricks from inside a pillar that once stood next to the monument.
Now it is fallen and being called back to nature.

Steampunk Wonderland

Part 2 of 2. Saturday evening we went to a costume party that was a steampunk wonderland theme. I've been working on these costumes for a long time now and it is exciting to have some pictures of them finally. Originally I claimed the White Rabbit and March Hare for hubby and myself but after I started work on my White Rabbit I was having trouble finding the right items to modify for the March Hare and I found an illustration of the White Rabbit I just had to do, the herald.
I had found a men's knight costume pattern (McCall's M5500) at a pattern sale a while back that worked well for the base. The pattern was a little misleading in the images, they must have put t-shirts under the tunics for the photo shoot, next time we wear these costumes I'll do the same for Hubby. I was going to make a ruffled collar for his outfit but in the end I think it would have been too much with his beard. One more thing I'll add for next wearing is a herald hat with plume, the ears can come up through the hat.
I love the ruffled spats, they were a first attempt at the ones for my costume but they came out huge so I switched to a different pattern. I think they add a nice touch to his costume.
I found the horn on Amazon.

I found this vintage vest in the dollar bin at The Other Side months ago. The watch applique I found on Etsy. Since it was a men's vest and there for not form fitting I wore my corset underneath to keep a feminine shape. You can find a close up of my top hat on Instagram.
You can almost see the head of my cane, it is a white rabbit. Harvey was Hubby's grandmother's favorite cane, it was very special being able to borrow it for the evening.
I had planned on knitting both wrist and ankle cuffs but after getting half way done on the second ankle one I got a little bogged down, I can crochet for days straight but knitting always gets boring to me. I do love the pattern though and once I feel like getting the needles out again I will make more. If you knit I recommend you buy the pattern, it is very well written and is super easy to do. Antique Alice in Wonderland Cuffs, it even has the perfect name.

Our powdered hair turned out so well. We did leave cornstarch on everything though, luckily it washed out of everything although I still keep finding it in the bathroom.

Everyone's costumes at the party were amazing and we had a super fun time.
