Royal

I'm loving this little bit of autumn weather we are having this week. I love wearing cardies and tights. I just got these tights in the mail and I couldn't wait to wear them. I really wanted to get these tights when I bought this dress but I waited till there was a cool touch in the air.
This is one of my favorite dresses, it has appeared several times on the blog before 1 | 2 | 3

Necklace- ModCloth sale
Cardigan- Burlington
Dress- BB Dakota (eBay)
Tights- Sock Dreams
Shoes- Rampage Kids

My mom and I hit up our favorite vintage store today. They had put over 200 items of clothing (and purses) in dollar bins and we were very excited to go digging. I found two nice looking purses, a jumper, a baby blue cardigan, a spider print shirt, and two2 nice  blazers. My mom found a purse, a long sleeve shirt, and a lovely wool cardigan. I was worried hitting them later in the week after they announced the sale but I think we both scored some great finds.
Tonight is a home volleyball game and it is a big ACC match-up so it will be a tense game. I'm going to pack dinner and take it for us to eat before the game since there won't be time for Hubby to come home before the game. It is nice that he works on campus right by the gym so he just walks over from his office.

Have a great weekend

Pastel Pretty

This week has been exciting. I love getting out of the house more than just a couple of days a week. Well, I get out every day to walk but I love days I get to dress up. Today Hubby and I had lunch with his Aunt. We had an amazing lunch at an great little Chinese/Japanese restaurant. We spoiled ourselves with a bento box each. The bento boxes served on beautiful segmented trays and have a main dish, steamed veggies, fried rice, lo mein, and a spring roll. There is no way you can leave the restaurant and not be stuffed.
I was on the fence about what to wear until this morning when on my walk I saw all the beautiful lavender morning glories were in bloom.  It got me thinking about my lavender dress I had picked up The Salvation Army a few weeks ago on half price day.
This dress has a pretty style, I'll try to get some shots of it sans cardie. It has a nice length skirt and is fully lined. It is thin cotton and more of a spring color but I think pairing it with black makes it wearable in fall and possibly even winter. The dress isn't bad at all for being from Walmart, I'm just glad I didn't buy it at Walmart (you know... because...shopping at Walmart).
Hair flower- eBay
Jewelry- Vintage from Etsy
Cardie- Target (thrifted)
Dress- Walmart (thrifted)
Tights- Sock Dreams
Shoes- Aerosoles
Oh my, how lovely the weather is today. When I walked this morning it was about 68 degrees and even now in the afternoon it hasn't even hit 80 degrees. It definitely feels like fall, I hope this weather stays around for a bit. I may be able to start my longer (4 mile) daily walks again, during summer I was forced to cut down to 2 miles because the heat, UV index, and humidity.
Another reason I'm excited is I got a new (to me) washer. It is in really good shape and Hubby is putting it in today. My old washer was leaving clothes dirtier than I put them in and getting stuck on fill which caused several floods of the pantry.

Would any one be interested in a button trade? Mine can be found to the side, if you want to trade just leave me a comment saying you linked me.

Na na na na na BATMAN!

I know there are a lot more na's but I shortened it for the title.

We have family in town so last night we had a big family dinner out. We ate at one of our favorite local restaurants, Midtown Pies. They (and their sister location Gaines Street Pies) have amazing pies that are the stuff of legend.
Midtown Pies has a great video game mural
A little storm kicked up while we were at dinner so we really didn't get any great shots of my new dress. I whipped this baby up the day I wore it, I can't believe I finished it in a matter of hours. I was unsure of the pattern when it was going together because the sleeves didn't want to fit. I pulled them off and resewed them with a smaller seam allowance but even that didn't seem to help. Amazingly after I put in the zipper and tried it on the sleeves worked, they are tight but I have big arms so that is to be expected.
I am thrilled with Butterick 5982. It has a range of pieces for a better fit for different cup sizes. It doesn't go past D but even the D cut gives so much better of a fit than most patterns. The skirt in the pattern is gathered and soft pleated but for sake of time and sanity I just gathered the whole skirt and it looks just fine. This may be my favorite dress I have made yet, it is going to be so much fun remixing since it is loaded with tons of bright colors. I have lots of yellow and red accessories and shoes :)

Talk Like a Pirate

In grand tradition one of the local bars celebrates talk like a pirate day by serving up a house beer, Dread Pirate Ale, and by grilling up delicious yums on the grill. They had amazing garlic butter corn for just a buck an ear. And as always the bartenders deck out in full pirate garb.

I still need to remake my pirate costume, I haven't gotten around to it since I lost weight several years ago. I threw this together for the night.
I made the blouse but everything else purchased from various sources.
After a wonderful dinner and a drink at the bar we dropped by Krispy Kreme for a free dozen donuts each (for wearing a full pirate costume). Ooh, I ate too many since we hit them right at "Hot Now". No more donuts for me, I must be good.

Going Green

I think my body is ready for Fall, it has already tried to go into hibernation. I have unable to get up before noon most days this week, it has been throwing off my whole schedule. It was rainy earlier this week so I couldn't have gone on my morning walks anyway but I wish I could have gotten more around the house done. We have both my and hubby's family coming to town soon and I need to be able to show off the house. My great grandma hasn't been able to visit since we bought the house, in fact the last time she was able to come was when hubby and I got married.
I finished this dress Monday. Since it is lined I had to do a fair bit of hand sewing (and I hate hand sewing). Not only did I title this post "Going Green" because my new dress is green, it happens to be made from a sheet so I was recycling.

I was pretty pleased with this pattern, especially for being a McCall's. The only thing I would have changed (and I will do on the next one) is evenly adjust the gathers in the skirt, they wanted far too much in the back, I already have a plentiful behind and I don't need the majority of volume of the skirt on it. I really love the cut out back, it shows off some skin without being too much or being unable to wear a bra. I also like it shows off the little pink elephant tattoo on my shoulder.
Earrings- Old
Necklace- Vintage, circa 1949
Dress, Made by me, McCall's 6955
Belt- Vintage

A friend offered to give me a ride to lunch today so I didn't have time to find a good photo location so I just took pictures at the little park near my house. It is all either in the bright sun or patchy shade, my poor camera hates to take pictures at it.
How do you like the new layout? I had been looking something cute and I found just the right template.

Artist Spotlight

You may have noticed the darling cherry earrings I wear in many of my posts. I have several different colors of cherries and I wear them all the time. They were made by a friend and former co-worker of mine. She makes all sorts of jewelry and crafts often featuring buttons, stamps, and hand made paper beads.

You can explore her Etsy shop here:

Belladonna's Rag Doll

The artist's dear cat is in great need of an operation and being a young family money is tight. Any purchase would be greatly appreciated and put towards the kitty's vet bill.

I was not paid to do this post, I am just a friend helping out a friend.

Pop of Pink

This weekend has been a busy one. The FSU woman's court volleyball hosted a tournament and played in 3 matches over 2 days. The team plays again on Tuesday, I can't wait. Volleyball is special to me and Hubby, it's our night out together.
Yesterday we attended a 50th birthday party for a good friend. It was a nice multicourse meal at a Thai restaurant, it was exciting to try new dishes. After dinner we went to a little wine bar that our friends are part owners of for a few glasses of wine. It was a nice evening and our friend had a great birthday. I owe him a gift, I just need to figure out what to make him.

I had had an outfit all picked out but after I ironed the dress I planned to wear I ended up wearing my lovely hot pink dress instead. It matched my hair very well, I don't know why my hair is showing up more red in photos, it is closer to the color of the dress.
I like to keep this dress for dressier events since it is very well made office wear. Last time I styled it I used the original tan belt and wore nude shoes. I really like the way I wore it this time, I love black and hot pink together.  I opted for flats since we were going to walk to the bar, I really wanted to wear my patent leather pumps but it wasn't very practical.
 Earrings- Local shop, similar
Necklace- Vintage, Etsy
Dress/belt- Thrifted
Bag- Betsey Johnson
Shoes- Payless
Ooh, ModCloth has another great sale going on, some of my dream shoes are still available in my size. Eep, must be strong and not buy bunny shoes.

- 40 in bunnies since it looks like they run small, 8.5 in unicorn ;) -

There are plenty of lovely dresses for killer prices, I'm not sure I can't live without any of them though, so I may just skip ordering a dress this time.

Here are some of my favorites from the sale though

Ready For Halloween

I've been dying to make something with this fabric since I got it back in July. I tried to get more of it so I could make a dress but my store sold out so I decided to make a skirt. I didn't like the skirt patterns I had so I used the skirt portion from McCall's 6955. The skirt of the dress is super full so I just used the front pattern and cut both the front and back from it. I sewed them together and added a casing and elastic  (no zipper to mess with). Normally I'm not a big fan of elastic waist skirts but I'm totally in love. Isn't the print adorable? It's a super sweet witch cameo print with scallops on the frames backed by polka dots.
I had a hard time picking shoes but I ended up wearing my black cat heels from T.U.K. I snagged them on Black Friday last year from ModCloth. They are a touch tight since they don't come in half sizes but if I went up they would have been too big. I also accented my outfit with black cat bell earrings and a "Be Afraid" necklace.
Bow- Burlington
Sunnies- Amazon
Lashes- Sally's Beauty
Be Afraid necklace- Etsy
Top- Thrifted
Belt- Vintage
Skirt- Made by me
Shoes- ModCloth similar
I took these photos in the Old City Cemetery. I was going to take photos next to Bessie's grave but the lighting was too harsh. Elizabeth Budd-Graham's grave is a Tallahassee legend, she is rumored to have been a witch and many people speak of odd things happening at the site.  I even have old photos from her grave with orbs and once my full camera battery died for no reason when taking photos. Her grave is the most elaborate in the cemetery and faces West rather than East.

Come, let the burial rite be read,
The funeral song be sung...
A dirge for her, the doubly dead,
In that she died so young.

Bessie
Although the cemetery is well maintained there is only so much you can do about crumbling stones and statuary after all, the cemetery is from the 1800's.

Everyday Steampunk

Today I was in a quirky mood so I dug out my gear necklace, dawned my grey dress, and put on my peep-toe mary janes. All together they portray a pretty good everyday steampunk look.
I have found that parts of downtown are nearly deserted around lunch so I can take pictures in relative peace. If anyone does walk by they just assume I'm a photography student at one of the universities.
Today I took pictures at St. John's. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in town. It was built in 1838.
The stained glass windows are gorgeous but you can't get good pictures of them from outside during the day.
Although St John's is in a historic section of downtown it is right next to a newer bank building. It is a stark contrast from the architecture of the church to the plain, boring bank. I admire how my city preserves history but at the same time allows new infrastructure.
Earrings- Dichroic glass (given to me by MIL)
Necklace- Art swap many years ago
Brooch- Goodie bag from Goodwill
Dress- Thrifted
Purse- Vintage
Socks- Bells Outlet
Shoes- Thrifted
Shoe Clips- Antique, gift from dear friend

(Thank goodness for the socks, I finally got to wear these shoes without them removing the top layer of skin)
As you can see I attempted to get my hair into milkmaid braids. I really need about an inch or two more in length to work a little better. I hoped this pic would show off my stunning new color in my hair, it's an electric magenta, but it was a little dark.
As a final note today- the world lost Joan Rivers. I always danced to my own drummer when it came to fashion but when I started watching Fashion Police I got to see big name fashion and to learn about things I never would have gotten to see or hear about in normal day to day life. Joan enriched my life and to her I give a big thank you.
